Deck Review- Yoga Cats

Published July 8, 2017 by Tarot By Elizabeth

We’ve all heard of the benefits of owning a cat such as reduced stress; lower blood pressure and    most of all, the general all over happiness we feel when owning such a majestic yet curiously aloof animal.

Many of us already know how a regular yoga practice can assist us in becoming more flexible; calm and even more resistant to illnesses such as colds, but not too many have considered combining the two popular activities mentioned above!

Say hello to Yoga Cats, featuring the phenomenal photography of Daniel Borris and it’s accompanying 96 page guidebook written by Alison DeNicola. Dan Borris’ work has appeared in magazines like Vanity Fair; Rolling Stone and The New York Times and photography for the Gap and Time Warner.

Alison DeNicola is a successful Five Element Yoga Teacher, Energy Healer and author.  Her two books, Mudras for Awakening the Energy Body and Mudras for Awakening of the Five Elements deck and book sets also published by U.S. Games Systems. She can be found living and teaching in Stamford Connecticut.

It was love at first sight for me, being a nut for cats and a beginning Yoga student myself. I was however, not quite sure what treat was in store for me until I opened the sturdy cardboard box and got my first glance at these awesome little felines in adorable yoga poses.

In its full color booklet, the reader is first introduced to this deck by a few short paragraphs about how the deck can be used. Like shuffling the cards each day and drawing one card that can inspire your spirit with one of 44 images and messages.

These large, beautiful cards can be used in a more intuitive way by asking questions such as “What do I need to be mindful of at this time?” and allowing the image and message to guide you into a more mindful state.

I absolutely adore the way each cat is named and embody their individual purrsonities! The Yoga poses are described in its booklet for a more detailed benefits of the poses and how to add them to your regular yoga routine or as a way to begin a regular routine for stress reduction and inner calm.

This is an amazing deck that will pleasantly surprise as well as inspire you to step out of your  day to day routine and add a little magic and healthy habits to your life. No prior knowledge of oracle cards or affirmations are needed, anyone can enjoy Yoga Cats right out of the box!

Tarot Review: LeGrande Circus & Sideshow Tarot

Published August 31, 2015 by Tarot By Elizabeth

“Come one, come all… Step right up…Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, Children of all ages! You are about to witness a daring Tarot deck of adventure and wonder…of excitement, guaranteed to delight! A deck that you will remember throughout your lifetime! Never before has anything so dashing been seen! I am privileged to introduce to you the star of the show…..(drum roll please)…..The LeGrande Circus & Sideshow Tarot!”

Created and illustrated by Joe Lee, a former professional clown with Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus, this gorgeous 78 card Tarot deck with it’s bright colors and vintage circus styled posters is guaranteed to please almost every circus aficionado and tarot reader alike. After leaving the circus life, Joe moved to New York City where he studied and later taught art classes, now living in Indiana, he works as an illustrator.

The cards measure nearly 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ and are accentuated by a red line frame, with a colorful mirror image clown on the back that allows the reader to use reversals if so chosen. I had no problems shuffling and I have always loved U.S. Games Systems card stock because I am always able to mix the cards well without damage to edges or card stock itself.

Following the familiar Tarot Archetypes found in most traditional style decks, Joe Lee has quite successfully captured the unique flavor of circus sights and sounds without sacrificing the essence of conventional interpretations. The Major Arcana reflect the popular parade of archetypal characters with the exception of The Popess, replacing the accustomed High Priestess and the Pope filling in for the more commonly named Heirophant. Strength is enumerated 8 and Justice sports the familiar numeral 11.

Here you will find personalities such as quintessential fat lady (the Empress) the enigmatic Ring Master (the Emperor), a fearsome tiger as he leaps dramatically through a burning ring of flames (the Sun) and the ever popular tramp clown (as the lonely Hermit)

The Minor Arcana, a depiction of day to day life, reflects the quirky and unparalleled circus lifestyle with it’s high wire performers, juggling acts and cast of characters unique to this big top venue.

Each suit corresponds to an aspect of this colorful lifestyle. Wands, conjuring the backbreaking work of man and animal to raise the tent, Cups, the world of performance engaging it’s onlookers, Coins depicting the business of the show with its managers keeping the troupe on the road and the “butcher” hawking his “floss” and popcorn in the stands and the Swords, embedded deep in the bizarre and sometimes frightening heart of the sideshow like the sword swallower and knife thrower garnering wondrous gasps from their riveted audience.

The 60 page LWB (little white book) is comprised of both upright and reversed interpretations for each of it’s 78 cards, and includes a paragraph or two, explaining to it’s readers, the circus life and it’s characters. As an added bonus, the LWB provides a captivating spread named after this decks title, developed by Jody Boginski and my favorite lady, Lynn Araujo…kudos ladies for a truly awesome spread!

This is an absolutely delightful Tarot deck, one that even the newest readers can pick up and read straight away. I just can’t express how impressed I was as soon as I opened the box and began working with such a colorful cast of characters! I would urge readers both young and old, experienced or not, to add this to their collections!

Deck Review- The Shapeshifter Tarot

Originally published in 1998,  The Shapeshifter Tarot turned out to be a huge hit for the creators DJ Conway, Sirona Knight and featured the amazing artwork of artist Lisa Hunt…whose other decks include The Celtic Dragon, Fairy Tale, Fantastical Creatures and the wildly popular Ghosts and Spirits Tarot.

The deck went out of print for a time but Llewellyn Worldwide decided that they would give a whole new crop of Tarot readers and enthusiasts a new chance at owning and working with this fantastic deck. The deck itself is made up of 81 cards and comes with the standard LWB (little white book) rather than the original deck that came as a kit, but this in no way detracts from Lisa’s wonderfully detailed and evocative imagery.

The cards are bordered in a lovely deep blue color with the elemental association at the top and a number and keyword at the bottom. The first thing that you will notice about this awesome deck is in it’s elemental qualities. The Wands and Swords suit has been switched to highlight the qualities imbued by DJ Conway and at first may seem a bit different but after working with this deck for several weeks, I found that these associations actually lend a deeper, more intuitive approach when applied to readings themselves.

The Major Arcana have a few cards that are renamed to fit the quality of their meanings and I’ve found this to be more descriptive in assessing questions posed by my clients. Here are a few of the re-named cards…

Initiation, Sorcerer, Sorceress, Mother, Father, Knowledge,
Lovers, Rebirth, Balance, Transcendence, Journey, Dreamer and Oneness

I’ve had nothing but favorable comments when I asked if they would mind using The Shapeshifter Tarot and some even have remarked that Lisa’s artwork truly spoke to them on a level that other decks have not. I absolutely love the extra cards, I’m a big fan of gaining a little extra insight!.

This deck is a awesome resource to help bridge the gulf between people, animals, and nature. I would highly recommend this deck for anyone who loves the fabulous art of Lisa  Hunt and  a fresh insight into your tarot readings!
