Deck Review- Yoga Cats

Published July 8, 2017 by Tarot By Elizabeth

We’ve all heard of the benefits of owning a cat such as reduced stress; lower blood pressure and    most of all, the general all over happiness we feel when owning such a majestic yet curiously aloof animal.

Many of us already know how a regular yoga practice can assist us in becoming more flexible; calm and even more resistant to illnesses such as colds, but not too many have considered combining the two popular activities mentioned above!

Say hello to Yoga Cats, featuring the phenomenal photography of Daniel Borris and it’s accompanying 96 page guidebook written by Alison DeNicola. Dan Borris’ work has appeared in magazines like Vanity Fair; Rolling Stone and The New York Times and photography for the Gap and Time Warner.

Alison DeNicola is a successful Five Element Yoga Teacher, Energy Healer and author.  Her two books, Mudras for Awakening the Energy Body and Mudras for Awakening of the Five Elements deck and book sets also published by U.S. Games Systems. She can be found living and teaching in Stamford Connecticut.

It was love at first sight for me, being a nut for cats and a beginning Yoga student myself. I was however, not quite sure what treat was in store for me until I opened the sturdy cardboard box and got my first glance at these awesome little felines in adorable yoga poses.

In its full color booklet, the reader is first introduced to this deck by a few short paragraphs about how the deck can be used. Like shuffling the cards each day and drawing one card that can inspire your spirit with one of 44 images and messages.

These large, beautiful cards can be used in a more intuitive way by asking questions such as “What do I need to be mindful of at this time?” and allowing the image and message to guide you into a more mindful state.

I absolutely adore the way each cat is named and embody their individual purrsonities! The Yoga poses are described in its booklet for a more detailed benefits of the poses and how to add them to your regular yoga routine or as a way to begin a regular routine for stress reduction and inner calm.

This is an amazing deck that will pleasantly surprise as well as inspire you to step out of your  day to day routine and add a little magic and healthy habits to your life. No prior knowledge of oracle cards or affirmations are needed, anyone can enjoy Yoga Cats right out of the box!

Deck Review- Secrets of the Mystic Grove

Published July 7, 2017 by Tarot By Elizabeth

Over the last few years, Oracle decks have been gaining in popularity among Tarot and non Tarot readers alike. Many readers choose to use an Oracle deck in addition to the Tarot cards they may pull each day, giving them a little bit more depth and insight into messages that are important.

One new Oracle deck,  Secrets of the Mystic Grove  is a truly beautiful new deck from U.S Games featuring artwork from Mary Alayna Thomas coupled with the amazing Arwen Lynch crafting the book of interpretations that accompanies this 44 card deck.

This Oracle deck invites it’s user to enter into the world of imagination and beauty, that quickly enfolds you in its mystical landscape. Cards such as 43: Unity that welcomes you to the realm of spirit, and a gorgeous air of zen. Amongst the purple banner and a pair of charming chickadees you will find butterflies, roses and the theme of connectedness, harmony and equilibrium.

Card 22: Beauty.  A woman in deep thought poses on this card along with orange blossoms, maidenhair ferns and a colorful little bird. Self esteem; Radiance and Strength are the message of this card, encouraging the reader to choose that which brings joy to their hearts and brings forth your inner radiance.

This deck is a bit bigger than most decks but the size is awesome for getting the most from the amazing artwork. It truly does beg a deeper stroll into this magical world of insight and discovery.

The accompanying booklet, 95 pages long and full of different ways that you can integrate its meanings into your daily life and at the end of each cards narrative, there are three very insightful journaling prompts that will help you integrate its message as it applies to your life, making it quite personal.

I absolutely adore these cards, each morning I pull one or two for my day or use the special spread included at the end of the booklet. Secrets of the Mystic Grove can be used as a stand alone method of introspection or alongside of your favorite Tarot deck. This is a wonderful deck that can be used if you’ve had Oracle card experiences or if you’re an absolute beginner.

An Anniversary To Remember

Published August 19, 2016 by Tarot By Elizabeth

Just one of 20 stones in commemoration of the Salem victims

Today marks a sad anniversary that most of the world has long forgotten. It is the 324th anniversary of one of the Salem Witch Trial victims, John Willard.

John was only thirty five at the time of death and you are all probably wondering why I  focus on this specific day…I do because John Willard was my sixth Great Uncle.

Even in this day and age, as we think ourselves educated; intelligent and thoroughly modern individuals, religious tolerance has become an oxymoron.

For individuals or groups that do not fit inside the little box of popular ideals, all nice and neat, there are many more hurdles to overcome…we can read about it or watch it on the daily news. It seems to surround us, despite our protests to the contrary.

I think a lot about August 19th, 1692 and the deadly mania that swept Salem back then, (since renamed “Danvers” in an attempt to distance itself from the horrible red stain in our history.)

You won’t find the true story of events that led up to this tragedy in the history books (1690’s law held that property and assets belonging to the convicted were forfeit to the leader of the community) and that’s a real shame because as George Santayana’s famous quote says: “Those who do not remember the past, are doomed to repeat it.”

An epithet that is still being sadly repeated three centuries after the conclusion of the trials.

So, today, I thought this would be a great time to grab my Thoth deck and see what Great Uncle John had to say about the lessons we need to always keep in our minds and hearts.

The question: “What lessons do we need to learn from this chapter of American history, called The Salem Witch Trials?”

Now, keep in mind that when I asked my question, I was addressing my Spirit Guide that assists me while working with my cards….

You may notice right away that the second and fourth cards seem to pop out at you….the Knight of Disks and the Hanged Man… This was letting me know that my Spirit Guide had stepped aside and Great Uncle John was delivering his message personally!

The Knight of Disks is an Earth element as many readers will know, but a little known fact about my Great Uncle was that his birthday fell on  January 15,1657 …making him an Earth sign.

(Ironically, the Tarot card representing his birth sign is the Devil)

In history, Knights often went out on missions to bring order and secure boundaries for the local King or rulers, no different than a Knight, Great Uncle John was a Constable for his township and took his task seriously.

Not soon after the hysteria began, John Willard had gone to his superiors and protested the ever widening net of accusations and spoke for those that were being falsely accused.

He stepped down as Constable saying that he was in no way, shape or form supporting or being party to the madness.

The Hierophant (Rev. Samuel Parris, Uncle to Abagail Williams, one of the original accusers) the Five of Wands (the hysteria) and the Chariot (the speed of wild accusations and the voracity of fear and ignorance unchecked) all tell the rest of John’s story….

Towards the end of April, after Willard had abandoned his post as a constable and publicly doubted the girls accusations, he was himself, accused of being a witch.

Great Uncle John, (the epitome of Knighthood) continued to, from behind bars and even as he walked to the gallows that day, protest that he and all of the others accused, were indeed innocent and continued to plea for the return of sanity and order.

What is his message to those who have ears?

Intolerance founded on fear based dogmatic beliefs and willful ignorance will continue to race on….setting a raging fire to all in it’s path, leaving nothing but ash unless we, as the whole of humanity, step up to stop it.

Sometimes I pull a shadow card, which I take from the very bottom of the deck, it was Adjustment, (Justice, in Rider-Waite-Smith decks)

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

The Wind Beneath My Wings

Published April 12, 2013 by Tarot By Elizabeth

Every morning, I draw three or four cards just to see how my day is going to go or any special messages that Spirit might have for me. This morning was the most encouraging trio,  I heard Spirit say that between connection to Source energy and tapping into my abilities… I will be sustained. Spirit is the wind beneath our wings that holds us aloft and allows us to soar!

Tuning In….

Published April 8, 2013 by Tarot By Elizabeth

Allowing Spirit to speak through the Tarot isn’t always rainbows and roses…Life  is often unfair and although I’m very aware of this, sometimes the message is very sad…especially when the message will cause pain to someone that you love.  Last Thursday was one such time, you see, a child who is very dear to me had taken her kitty to the vet because he had suddenly become very sick. I called my mom that day, mainly just to chat and the topic of poor Perro came up. My mom surprised me a bit when she asked me to pull a few cards and see what they had to say about the situation. So, I shuffled and drew…It was instantly clear that the news was not going to be happy. I was using the new Fantastical Creatures Tarot by the fabulous Lisa Hunt and DJ Conway because it just seemed the right deck to use in this situation and The Knight of Swords, Ten of Swords and Three of Swords came up.

I knew that it would break Nikki’s heart (she’s a cat lover such as myself) and that made my heart heavy as I relayed Spirit’s message back to my mom. A small part of me wished secretly that perhaps I was wrong but deep in my heart I knew that wasn’t the case. I didn’t want to cause undo pain for Nikki, she was in distress enough at this time, so I asked my mom just to keep it between us. I waited till Friday afternoon to ask my guides if anything had changed and once again, the Three of Swords popped up .  Friday night I was looking at Perro’s picture on my altar, still sending comforting energy, letting my mind wander and out of nowhere, this overwhelming, nearly hysterical fear washed over me and I could not miss it’s message. I had made contact with Perro’s energy and the feelings that overwhelmed me came straight from this little fellow. He was very afraid of dying alone and was almost panicked that he could possibly be left at the vets so far from his beloved Nikki.

I instantly sent a message to Nikki and relayed his message…”please don’t leave me  here”  and asked her if she could take him to be buried at mom’s where she could visit often. She got right back to me and let me know that she was indeed going to take him to a special spot at my mom’s… already picked out. The relief that washed over me was palpable…I shed more than my share of tears that evening, knowing that Perro was relieved and needed  not to worry…sometimes tuning in to others emotions is a tough thing to experience.

It’s strange how Spirit works, it will never cease to amaze me even when the messages are sad…..
